Seville Estate’s Award-Winning Run Continues
One of the Yarra Valley’s best known wineries – Seville Estate – has taken out 4 trophies at this year’s 2016 Yarra Valley Wine Show and there’s no sign of them slowing down anytime soon. Owners Graham and Margaret Van Der Meulen who purchased the Seville Estate in December 2005 said the awards were an acknowledgement of a commitment to maintaining a reputation for excellence at the boutique winery.
Established by Dr Peter McMahon in 1972, Seville Estate along with other wineries such as Mount Mary, Yeringberg, Yarra Yering, St Huberts and the like, started producing wines that helped re-establish the region’s reputation for wine growing. Surprisingly in a region more renowned for its red wines produced from Cabernet and Pinot Noir, it was the Seville Estate Shiraz that received the most attention, quickly becoming one of Victoria’s most sought after wines.
A new generation of the McMahon family has also become involved in Seville Estate. Peter and Margaret’s grandson, Dylan McMahon, is now the winemaker following the passion ignited two generations before. The Van Der Meulens, who ran their own successful design and construction company in Brisbane for 18 years, have long been passionate about wine and looked at several wineries around the country before settling on Seville. They bought the property from the controlling group of partners and moved to the winery in December 2005.
Both Graham and Margaret have established themselves as regional ambassadors for the Yarra Valley. Graham is a current member of the Yarra Valley Winegrowers marketing sub-committee and Margaret, who has a graduate science background, brings a Masters in Wine Science, qualifications in commercial cooking and cheese-making to the estate.
Active in the vineyard and winery, Graham and Margaret work at the cellar door seven days a week. Margaret grows some of the produce and acts as chef for the cellar door and functions.
“With our lovely view, it’s a great spot to sit, enjoy a light meal, and talk to people about the wines and great local produce. With the high quality of the wines, they’re easy to sell. I love to use the fresh local produce in my menus, and the Yarra Valley does that so well. It’s a great job that we truly love.“
A great winery needs a passionate and talented winemaker, and so destiny smiled on the estate again when Dylan McMahon, who was on track to become an electrical engineer, finally decided to continue the family tradition and wine. His grandfather was of course Dr Peter McMahon who established Seville Estate. Dylan spent his first 5 years working with direction from previous winemakers Alistair Butt and Iain Riggs and has been Seville Estate’s winemaker since 2004. The opportunity to work and travel is also part of the appeal for Dylan, who says he feels very fortunate to have travelled in his early career to work the 2002 vintage at Hugel & Fils and 2003 at Domaine Paul Blanck in France’s Alsace region.
But clearly the biggest influence on Dylan’s winemaking philosophy is the good doctor. “My grandfather retired in 1996. I’ve learnt from him that while concentration is important in wine, elegance and finesse is the key to our wine.” Dylan graduated from Charles Sturt University in Wagga with a Bachelor of Wine Science in 2006 and continues his work at Seville Estate.
Situated on a ridge of red volcanic soil overlooking the upper Yarra Valley, hidden from the well-trodden tracks of the mainstream, the soils at Seville Estate are extremely fertile red to grey volcanic, over a clay base. The vines are substantially dry grown as irrigation is only used when the vines are under extreme stress. Seville Estate has now grown to include a cafe/restaurant which is open to the public from 11am to 3pm Friday to Sunday with Friday and Saturday nights available for private bookings.
For larger functions, guests can book the brand event space called ‘Aspect’ which offers a unique architectural space framing one of the finest views in the Yarra Valley. This unique space was designed to cater for a variety of even types including weddings, private events and corporate functions. The kitchen can cater for up to 130 people and offers a range of dining options from stand-up cocktail style and canapés to a full 5-course degustation menu.
All events are of course matched with the exceptional wines made at Seville Estate.
M & S Transport are a proud supplier of transport services to Seville Estate and we encourage you to take the opportunity to visit this extraordinary vineyard this summer.
