Re-Powering Air Traffic Control

Efficient Delivery of Generators to Air Traffic Control Sites across Australia

Introduction:

In this case study, we examine the successful delivery of generators to multiple air traffic control (ATC) sites across Australia. The project aimed to ensure uninterrupted power supply at critical ATC facilities during their upgrade, mitigating the risk of power outages and enhancing the safety and efficiency of the country’s airspace management system.

Challenge:

Closing down an airport, and the roads leading in and out of airports – are incredibly difficult.  Furthermore, strict timelines had to be adhered to due to the critical nature of ATC operations.

The ATC control towers were built on top of the generators, so they had to be installed at the precise moment construction was ready for them.

Solution:

To overcome these challenges, a comprehensive strategy was devised. First, a team of experts conducted a thorough analysis of each ATC site, taking into consideration the terrain, weather conditions, and site-specific requirements. Next, a fleet of specialized vehicles was deployed to transport the generators, stage them in locations within 5kms of the site so they could be called upon when windows were available to close roads and access cranes. These vehicles were equipped with advanced GPS tracking systems, enabling real-time monitoring of their location and ensuring optimal route planning.

Result:

The implementation of the delivery strategy was highly successful. All ATC sites across Australia received the generators within the specified timelines, resulting in enhanced operational resilience. This resulted in improved safety, reduced delays, and, ultimately a new, enhanced overall
